Hariprasad Chaurasia Biography

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is the doyen of the instrument, flute. He is widely accepted as the most talented classical flautist of India. Born in Allahabad, he played a significant role in promoting this musical instrument worldwide. For his contributions to Indian music, Indian government has honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 1992 and Padma Vibhushan in 2000. He has also received honorary doctorates from North Orissa University in 2008 and Utkal University in 2011. Sangeet Natak Academy in 1984, National Eminence award in 2009, Pune Pandit Award in 2008 and Dinanath Mangeshkar Award – 2000 are among those honours received by Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Along with Shivkumar Sharma, he formed the famous musical pair of composers – Shiv-Hari. Together they have given music to many hit Bollywood movies like – Silsilay, Chandini, Lamhe, Sahibaa, Vijay, Faasle, Parampara and Darr.  Together they have worked for 8 movies and many other projects. They received Filmfare nominations for best music for the movies – Silsila, Chandini and Darr.  

 

Hariprasad was born on 1 July 1938 as the son of a wrestler. He lost his mother at an early age. His father wanted his son to become a wrestler. But son dreamt about music and learnt music without his father’s knowledge. He got vocal music training from his neighbour, Pandit Rajaram, at the age of 15. But later he switched to flute and learnt under Pandit Bholanath Prasanna for 8 years. He joined the All India Radio, Cuttack in 1957. Later he got guidance from Annapurna Devi, daughter of Baba Allaudin Khan.

 

Later Hariprasad Chaurasia became one of the top names of Indian classical music as a flautist. He frequently appeared in many cultural programs of Doordarshan and his association with Shivkumar Sharma is also well known. He has associated with several western musicians, including John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek and Ken Lauber to compose music for Indians. He serves as the artistic director of the World Music Department at the Rotterdam Music Conservatory in the Netherlands. He is the founder of Vrindavan Gurukul in Mumbai and Vrindavan Gurukul in Bhubaneshwar to train students in Hindustani Basuri (flute).
