Harindranath Chattopadhyay Biography

Harindranath Chattopadhyay was a poet, an actor, and a member of the 1st Lok Sabha from Vijayawada constituency. Hari was born to Aghornath Chattopadhyay, a scientist-philosopher, and Barada Sundari Devi, a poetess on 2 April 1898 in Hyderabad. He is the younger brother of Sarojini Naidu who introduced him to social reformer cum freedom fighter, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay who was a widow that time. They got married but parted in good ways as well.  Their divorce marked the very first legal separation granted by the courts of India. As a poet, his popular poems are Noon and Shaper Shaped. After literature, his next interests were politics, theatre and cinema. He received Padma Bhushan in the year 1973. His recital of India’s first rap song, Rail gaadi of the movie Aashirwaad, on AIR was very popular during 1970’s. He acted in this movie in supporting role also.

 

Harindranath’s interest in drama and movies prompted him to work in many movies. He appeared in supporting role in Hindi movies like Tere ghar ke saamne, Raat aur din, Teen deviyan, Mehbooba, Bawarchi, Aashirwad, Aashiana, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Raaz, Naunihaal, Ghungroo Ki Awaaz, Akhiyon ki jaroko se and Pyar Mohabbat. His appearance in Satyajit Ray’s Bengali movie, Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne alongside Robi Ghose and Tapen Chatterjee proved to be one of the memorable roles of his career. Later he appeared in both its sequels and the movies were major hits at box office too.

 

His poetry includes - The Feast of Youth (1918), The Magic Tree (1922), Blood of Stones (1944), Spring in Winter (1955) and Virgin and Vineyards (1967). He has also written a few playwrights - Abu Hassan (1918), Five Plays (1937) and Siddhartha, Man of Peace (1956). In 1951 Lok Sabha elections Harindranath Chattopadhyay won from Vijayawada Lok Sabha constituency in Madras State as an independent candidate. Thus He was the member of the 1st Lok Sabha (April 14, 1952 - April 4, 1957). He was supported by Communist party of India.
