Hardev Dilgir Biography

Hardev Dilgir, the pen name of Dev Threekewala, is a Punjabi writer and lyricist. Punjabi song - Kali, Tere Tille Ton, sung by Kuldeep Manak is his most noted song as a lyricist. He also wrote lyrics for many Punjabi films including Ajj Dhee Ik Raje Di of Sassi Punnu sung by Kuldeep Manak. His association with singer Kuldeep Manak is very famous. Together they have produced many Punjabi folklore songs. The first songs of Dev recorded by Manak included Jaimal Phatta and Kaulan (Raja Rasalu) in 1973. Hardev Dilgir is married to Preetam Kaur.

 

He was born as Hardev Singh, in 1939 in Threeke of Ludhiana, Punjab to S. Ram Singh. His primary schooling was done at his native village. His high school studies was done at High school in Lalton village. Later he studied in Ludhiana. Hari Singh Dilbar, a noted Punjabi poet was his school teacher at Lalton who encouraged young Dilgir to write poems. Dev wrote a song for children named ‘Chal Chakk Bhaine Basta School Challiye’ and got published in a magazine, Bal Darbar. His first publishing encouraged him a lot to write and thus started his literary career.

 

He started writing short stories with the penname Hardev Dilgir. Till now he has published around 35 books which include both poetry as well as short stories. His noted poems are Zaildarni, Rohee Da Phull and Ikk See Kurhi. He started his career as a teacher in the year 1960 and his first song was recorded in 1961. He got inspirations from his dear friends to write more. He wrote songs for singer Prem Kumar Sharma. Among all singers, his association with Kuldeep Manak is noted most. Their association began in the year 1973.
