Hans Raj Hans Biography

Hans Raj Hans is a very popular Punjabi pop and sufi singer. He has been one of the glowing stars in Punjabi pop in 1990s who popularized this genre of music across the globe. Apart from pop songs, his name is also associated with devotional music - Gurbani shabads and dharmic geets. He has also done playback singing for a few Bollywood and Punjabi movies. Noted Punjabi singers-actors Navraj Hans and Yuvraj Hans are his sons and his elder son Navraj hans is married to the daughter of King of Punjabi Pop – Daler Mehndi.

 

Famous for his long golden curly hair and his classical variations in singing, many of his chartbusters are still loved by millions of fans around the globe. Chorni (2000) and Jhanjhar are his popular albums. Tote tote ho gaya of Bichoo, Khaali Dil Nahin Jaan Bhi Hai of Kache Daage and Aaja Nachle of Monsoon Wedding are his popular Bollywood songs. He has also done playback singing for Jodi No 1, Nayak, Black & White, Patiala House, Shaheed 23 March 1931, Bend It Like Beckham, Mausam etc.

 

He was born in a Sikh family in Jalandhar. His family has no music history to tell. Yet Hans Raj started singing at a young age. He was influenced by a street singer who used to come to his home. Hans Raj learnt music from Ustad Puran Shahkoti Sahib who sings in Sufi style. His tag ‘Hans’ was given by his guru, as a compliment of his sweet singing voice like a 'Hans' (swan). He later learnt under Charanjit Ahuja and started singing in Punjabi folk, devotional and Sufi music. many of his indipop albums are indeed popular.
