Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu Biography

Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu was born on 3 December 1950  in Chikkapattanagere village in Chikmagalur district of Karnataka. His father Shri H. L. Narayanaswamy was a teacher who taught English language. Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattucompleted his basic education from Kadur, Tarikere and Birur, before moving to capital of Karnatka, Bengaluru where he completed his LLB.

 

H.L. Dattu began his career as an advocate in October 1975 in Bengaluru in all the streams of law namely civil, criminal, constitutional and taxation a rare achievement for a lawyer. He also represented government of Karnataka in the state High court as state counsel especially fo sales tax department during 1983 to 1990. He also took charge as advocate for the government of Karnataka from 1990 to 1993 and standing counsel from 1992 to 1993 and a senior standing counsel for the Income Tax department from 1993 to 1995.

 

In December 1995 Mr. Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu took charge of a judge in the Karnataka High Court and then promoted as Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court in February 2007. Later in May 2007, he was transferred to Kerala High Court as chief justice. Finally on 5 September 2014, H.L. Dattu was appointed as the next Chief Justice of India, as per recommendation of Chief Justice of India. Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu was sworn in as the 42nd Chief Justice of India on 28 September 2014. Incidentally his retirement is due on 2nd December 2015 which in terms of tenures is one of the longest for a chief Justice in recent years.

 

Dattu known for his hard work has also contributed in the field of social work and has been associated with Rotary Club. Dattu is a religious person and a hardcore devotee of Ganesha and Tirupati Balaji. He has a humanistic approach and believes that justice is not all about law books. As Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High court his decision to allow permanent job status for temporary contract jobs employees working in the High Court of Chhattisgarh was one of the greatest example of that.
