H. D. Kumaraswamy Biography

H. D. Kumaraswamy is an Indian politician and is the Chief Minister of Karnataka. He was born on 16th December 1959. His father was H. D. Deva Gowda, the former Indian Prime Minister. His nickname was Mannina Mommaga but among his friends and followers he was called as Kumar Anna. On 13th March 1986, he married Anita and he has a son named Nikhil.

 

He finished his high school studies at MES Educational Institution in Jayanagar, Bangalore and completed his PUC in Vijaya College and he finished his B.Sc., in Basavanagudi National College. He is a famous politician, film producer and distributor. He owns a cinema theatre at his home town, Holenarasipura.  He has produced many hit films in Kannada language like Ghalate Aliyandru, Suryavamsha, Premotsava and Chandra Chakori. He was elected as the president of the Karnataka Cinema Theatre Owners Association in 2002.

 

He began his political career in 1994. In 1996, he won the Lok Shaba seat at Kanakapura District and became Member of Parliament. His father Deva Gowda was serving as the Prime Minister of India at that time. He lost the seat in 1998 re-election.  In 1999, again he contested for Sathanur assembly but was defeated there also. In 2004, he won the election at Ramanagaram Assembly. When his brother H. D. Revanna withdrew the post of President of Janata Dal party (Secular), he started to dominate it.

 

He had forty two MLAs in his Janata Dal (Secular) party to form the government under his leadership. After the resignation of Dharam Singh, Karnataka Governor T. N. Chaturvedi called him to form the government on 28th January 2006.  As per the power-sharing agreement between Janata Dal (secular) and BJP, he should leave the office after a particular time. But some of his assembly members asked him to remain in office due to complications in the arrangements to transfer the power. After that, he refused to transfer the power to BJP. But at last, he resigned his post of Chief Minister.

 

Again he won the assembly election from Ramanagaram in 2008. But he could not prove his majority. In 2009 General Election, he stood as a candidate of Janata Dal (Secular) in a Lok Sabha Constituency of Bengaluru rural area. He remains in the post of President of the Karnataka State Unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) since 2009.

 

In 2018 elections in Karnataka state, JD(S) was the third largest party but after a post-poll alliance with the Rahul Gandhi led Indian National Congress, he was sworn in as the Chief Minister on 23 May 2018.
