Gurdas Maan Biography 
Gurdas Maan is a popular Punjabi singer and an actor. He is also known as a lyricist and choreographer. Till now he has recorded 34 albums and has written over 305 songs. In 2006, he received National award for best playback singer for Punjabi song, "Couplets of Heer" from the movie, Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris.
Maan completed his formal education from D.A.V College, Punjab. He was interested in sports. So he joined N.I.S. to gain a Masters degree in physical education. He participated in college and inter-college competitions, both in sports as well as music and has won many times as well. His song, "Dil Da Mamla Hai” was aired on Doordarshan in 1980 and he became a national figure. As a result, his first album was released by HMV in the year 1981. Though he received many offers of duets, he stick on to solo performances only. He directed and anchored the program, POP Time for the Doordarshan Delhi.
By 1990’s, Punjabi traditional songs began to get attention nationwide. Many Punjabi singers began to emerge by this time. Gurdas Mann was one such big name. 1990’s witnessed a high demand for Punjabi pop songs and they were often used in Hindi films as well. Slowly Punjabi songs began to attract people from other countries as well. His album Apna Punjab won Best Album at the 1998 Asian Pop and Media Awards held in Birmingham. He won Best Song for the title track and Best International Artist the same year. He has won many awards from music channels later, for singing as well as for lyrics.
Maan got an opportunity to perform live at the Royal Albert Hall for two nights in April 2011. He has received an honorary degree of Doctor of Music from the University of Wolverhampton. In 2009 he won "Best International Album" at UK Asian Music Awards for the album - Boot Polishan. Maan has appeared in a few movies of which, Waris Shah-Ishq Da Waaris and Shaheed-E-Mohabbat need special mention.
