Govind Talwalkar Biography

Govind Talwalkar is a noted journalist, editor and author of 25 books. B. D. Goenka Award and Durga Ratan Award for excellence in journalism and Ramshastri award for social justice are the major awards received by him. He is also a recipient of Lokmanya Tilak Award from the Government of Maharashtra.

 

Most of his books are based on the life of leaders of India's freedom movement like, Naoroji, Jawaharlal Nehru, Justice Ranade, Tilak and Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Talwalkar's recent book Bharat Ani Jag is considered as a good reference book which gives a scholarly analysis of India's foreign policy and economic and political situation post-independence. As a journalist he has contributed articles to The Times of India, The Telegraph of Calcutta, The Illustrated Weekly of India, Frontline magazine, the Deccan Herald and Asian Age.

 

Talwalkar was born on July 22, 1925 in Dombivali, Maharashtra in a middle class family. Talwalkar graduated from the University of Mumbai doing odd jobs for the payment of fees. He is the nephew of Gopinath Talwalkar - a well-known poet and writer and Sharad Talwalkar – a famous Marathi film and stage actor. After graduation, Talwalkar started his career as a journalist joining an intellectual magazine.

 

On the invitation of H.R. Mahajani, the then editor of Loksatta, he joined as a sub-editor at the age of 23. Talwalkar started writing editorials for its daily and weekly editions. Later Talwalkar worked as assistant editor of the Maharashtra Times for 6 years. He became its chief editor in 1968 and worked for long 27 years until he retired in 1996 which is still a record. He is known for editorials and columns published in various dailies and magazines.
