Goutam Ghose Biography

Goutam Ghose, also known as Gautam Ghose is a leading film director from Bengali who has made many critically well acclaimed movies. In 2010, his movie, Moner Manush received Nargis Dutt award for best feature film on National integration at national award section. Staring his career as a documentary director, he moved to photo journalist job and finally settled with direction field. He occasionally acts for movies and also known as Music Director and Cinematographer.

 

Ghose was born in Kolkata on 24 July 1950 in Faridpur, now a part of Bangladesh. He did his schooling from St John’s Diocesan School and Cathedral Missionary Boy’s School. Later he graduated from the University of Calcutta. He started his journey shooting documentaries in 1973. He later joined theatre and was active in theater circle in Kolkata. He also worked as photo journalist for a while. His first documentary was New Earth, followed by Hungry Autumn. Hungry Autumn earned him first intenational acclamation. He won Main Award at Oberhausen Film Festival in 1979.

 

He has also directed 10 feature films belonging to Hindi and Bengali - Maa Bhoomi, Dakhal, Paar, Antarjali, Yatra, Padma Nadir Majhi, Patang, Dekha, Abar Aranye, Gudia, Kaalbela and Moner Manush and most of them were critically well appreciated too. He has also directed many documentaries based on the life of many noted personalities including Satyajit Ray, Ustad Bismillah Khan and Dalai Lama. He has also worked on many ad films as well as short films.

 

His Hindi movie Paar gave national awards for best actors for Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi. The movie also received Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay in 1986, UNESCO Award at Venice Film Festival, Fipresci Awards and Red Cross Award at Verna Film Festival. His documentary on deserts of Rajasthan, Land of Sand Dunes won National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film in 1986. In 1982, his Bengali film Dakhal won Golden Lotus for Best Feature Film and Ecumenical Jury Prize for Human Rights Festival at Strasbourg.
