Gopinath Muthukad Biography

Gopinath Muthukad is the most popular and successful magician from Kerala. He is also known as an escapologist, and stunt performer. Though he pursued in law, he discontinued the studies as his real passion was magic and nothing else. Now, he enjoys a celebrity status all over Kerala. He is the founder of the first magic academy of Asia, Magic Academy Research Centre (MARC). He established the institute in Thiruvananthapuram in 1996. Many courses have been announced by Kerala University with the help of central government. Muthukad is also a winner of the International Merlin Award (2011) instituted by the International Magicians' Society. Merlin Award is considered the Oscar in magic and Muthukad is only the second Indian after P.C Sorcar junior to win this prestigious award. In 1995, he won Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy award – the first time the award being given to a magician.

 

Gopinath was born in Nilambur, Kerala in 1964. He is the youngest son of Kunjunni Nair and Devaki Amma in Kavalamukkatta village, Nilambur, Malappuram district. He completed his graduation in Mathematics from N.S.S College, Manjeri. He quit his studies in law to learn magic. Muthukad has a unique motto, ‘Magic with a Mission’. Through his art, he has earned a lot of popularity and fame and has entertained crowd a lot. Gopinath did his first stage performance at the age of 10.

 

Muthukad uses magic as a medium to connect with his audience. With his motto, ‘magic with a mission’, he has travelled countrywide as well as abroad and Vismaya Bharatha Yathra, Gandhi Mantra, Vismaya Swaraj Yatra and Mission India are a few among those noted journeys. He also holds campaigns against social evils such as tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse. He spent his 30th anniversary of his magical career by dedicating himself for charity. He was the chief organizer of 'Mazma', the first ever festival of traditional street magicians of India. It was held in the year 2005. He is the author of the first ever book on Magic in Malayalam language titled as 'Magic-What?How?'. He has also authored a few more books like Math-Magic, Easy-to-do magic tricks and Ormakalude Manthrika Sparsam.
