Gopi Chand Narang Biography

Gopi Chand Narang is a theorist, literary critic and scholar of English and Urdu languages. His critic works in Urdu include - stylistics, structuralism, post-structuralism and Eastern poetics. Indian government has honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 2004. Sahitya Academy award, Bhariya Jnanpith Moorti Devi Award in 2012, Ghalib Award in 1985, President of Pakistan Gold Medal in 1977, Iqbal Samman in 2011 and Professor Emeritus of Delhi University in 2005 are other major awards received by Narang. He has published 64 books belonging to Hindi, English and Urdu languages.

 

He was born in Dukki of British India on 11 February 1931. He took post-graduation in Urdu from University of Delhi in 1954 and got Research Fellowship by the Ministry of Education to complete his PhD in 1958.  After completion of studies he started his career as an Urdu lecturer at St. Stephen’s College where he worked for a couple of years. In 1963, he joined the University of Wisconsin as a Visiting Professor and later worked in University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and University of Oslo, Norway. Narang joined Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi as a Professor in 1974 where he worked for 12 years. He rejoined University of Delhi in 1986 and worked there till 1995. In 2005, Delhi University honoured him with 'Professor Emeritus’ title.

 

Through his works, he has dealt about the hybrid nature of Urdu language, particularly post-independence period. Hindustani Qisson se Makhooz Urdu Masnaviyan (1961), Urdu Ghazal aur Hindustani Zehn-o-Tehzeeb (2002) and Hindustan ki Tehreek-e-Azadi aur Urdu Shairi (2003) are the best instances of such works that deal with cultural study. Amir Khusrau ka Hindavi Kalaam (1987), Saniha-e-Karbala bataur Sheri Isti’ara (1986), Sakhtiyaat, Pas-sakhtiyat aur Mashriqui Sheriyaat (1993) and Urdu Zabaan aur Lisaniyaat (2006) are other noted works.
