Gope (hindi Actor) Biography

Gope Kamalani, who became popular as actor Gope was one of the popular comedians of older generation of Hindi cinema. Regarded as one of the best comedians of his times, and acknowledged masters of comedy alongside Johnny Walker, Yakub Khan Mehboob Khan and Agha, they have together worked in many movies. In the book, Genres of Indian Cinema, it’s referred that real talents of these actors were not used effectively in Bollywood. His first film was 'Insaan Ya Shaitan' (1933) in which Jaddan Bai acted. He played a small role in the movie and later went on to act in 140 films in a career spanning to almost 25 years from 1933–1957. Gope’s name is listed among the best comedians of Bollywood all time.

Gope was born on April 11, 1913 in Hyderabad of present day Telangana. His full name is Gope Vishandas Kamlani. He had 8 siblings. He moved to Mumbai and appeared on small screen for a minor role in 1933 film, 'Insaan Ya Shaitan'. Hindustan Hamara, Patanga and Chori Chori are some of his memorable roles and he made a good pair with great actor, Yakub Khan Mehboob Khan and excelled in comedy scenes. They together worked for the movies - Patanga (1949), Bazar (1949), Beqasoor and Sagai (1951). Very soon Gope became the leading comedian of his time.

The most popular hit of Shamshad Begum, "Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon" was pictured on Gope and Nigar Sultana and still popular among millions. Gope has also experimented doing negative roles and appeared aside Jeevan for the movie, Tarana to play the villain role in a comic style. He also started a production house Gope Productions in the 1950s and released a few films under this banner. His brother was a film director - Ram Kamlani. Gope was married to actress of yesterdays – Latika. He was active still his death in 1957.
