Gopal Rai Biography

Gopal Rai was born on 2nd May, 1975 in Mau which is one of the districts of Uttar Pradesh state of India. Gopal Rai did his basic schooling from Mau. He later went to Allahabad University for his further education. After completing his graduation he started preparing for Union Public Service Commision Examination. But Gopal Rai could not appear in that exam as he was not comfortable with crime situation in UP.

Gopal Rai Joined Lucknow University for Masters degree in Sociology and there he took part in student politics to oppose the criminal minded elements winning the student election of Lucknow University. He soon became part of the student politics of university and was soon elected as General Secretary of the students Union.

After completing his Post-graduation in 1998 he tried his hands at the student wing of the Communist Party of India, All India Students Association, Rai began his career with All India Students Association in Lucknow University. During his Lucknow university days he was shot by the rival group which left him crippled up to some extent. Gopal Rai with two other members is the main started the fund raising campaign of 'Mein Bhi Aam Aadmi', (I am also the common man) campaign that lasted until 26 January 2014. It will be appropriate to mention here that he contested in the year 2013 for Delhi legislative assembly election from Babarpur constituency but lost. Later he was again given the ticket from the same constituency in 2015 and this he succeeded. He was given the charge of ministry of Transport and Labour in Arvind Kejriwal's cabinet.

Gopal Rai is founder member of national executive of AAP and represents the party as spokesperson of the party. It would not be out of place to mention that it was on the initiative of Gopal Rai that AAP decided to enter into electoral politics against the suggestion of Anna Hazare who did not want his movement to enter into politics.
