Gopabandhu Das Biography

Gopabandhu Das was a famous writer and social worker from Orissa who is widely regarded as a legend. He is known as a social reformer, political activist, journalist, poet and essayist. He was instrumental in making Oriya journalism suitable for the common man. He started the weekly newspaper The Samaj in 1919 and served as its editor until his death. He also published a monthly magazine called Satyabadi in 1914. He was the first leader of Odisha to organise the Odisha Provincial Committee. He was active in politics as well as in social life. Subhash Chandra Bose called him ‘the father of the national movement in Odisha’.

He was born on 9 October 1877 to Swarnamayee Devi and Shree Daitari Dash in Suando Village, Puri. During his school days, he got influenced by the nationalist ideas of his teacher, Mukhtiar Ramachandra Dash. Seeing the cold response from the authorities to give help to cholera victims, he started a voluntary corps Puri Seva Samiti, which later became a cholera hospital. He also owned a bright literal career. His satire poem, The Indradhanu invited criticisms, but Gopabandhu refused to apologize for such writing. In 1915, he started ‘Satyabadi’ magazine. He joined Ravenshaw College, Cuttack as a student, where he started Kartavya Bodhini Samiti. He completed LLB from Kolkata University and worked as a government lawyer in Mayurbhanj court.

While at Kolkata, he started a labour union and night schools for Oriya laborers. He lost his wife at the age of 23, whom he married at the age of 12. He believed that education can eradicate the evils of the society and thus he started Satyavadi Vana Vidyalaya in 1909, inspired from Shantiniketan. Apart from a social life and political career, he also worked as a teacher.
