Gohar Mamajiwala Biography

Gohar Mamajiwala, fondly called Miss Gohar was an actress of Bollywood yesterdays. She was one of the singing actresses who also owned a film studio - "Shree Sound Studios" started by her husband - Chandulal Shah, a famous director, producer and screenwriter. She was one among those who started the film studio. In 1929 along with Chandulal Shah she founded the Ranjit Studios. She was a leading star during her time. Started with the silent era, she later moved on to talkies.

Gohar was born in 1910 into a wealthy Bhohri family and had a good childhood. However her family business collapsed and a family friend, Homi Master suggested her to join films to financially support her family. Her family also agreed. Homi Master was an actor-director of early Indian cinema known for his association with Kohinoor Film Company. Fortune and the Fools (1926) directed by Kanjibhai Rathore marked her acting debut at the age of 16, where she played female lead opposite Khalil. The movie was successful at box office thus marking the successful debut of Gohar. It was followed by her second Picture for Kohinoor, “Fairy of Ceylon” which became more successful than her debut movie, cementing her position in the silent era of movies. It was directed by her family friend Homi Master, and once again Khalil played the male lead. They were paired for the third time for the movie - “Shirin Farhad”.

“Shirin Farhad”, “Jasma Oden” and “Educated Wife are some of her hit movies with Kohinoor Films. Her association with Chandulal began with the movie - “Typist Girl”. "Shree Sound Studios" was started by a group of people including herself, her future husband Chandulal Shah,  Jagdish Pasta, Raja Sandow and cameraman Pandurang Naik. In 1929 along with Chandulal Shah she founded the Ranjit Studios, later renamed as Ranjit Movietone. She retired from film world with the early 1970s and died in 1985.
