Gnana Rajasekaran Biography

Gnana Rajasekaran is a retired IAS officer who has ventured into Tamil film industry as a director and screenwriter. He is also a theatre personality who writes plays. Made his directorial debut with Mogamul in 1994, he bagged National award for best debut director (Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director). In 2000, he directed the National award winning (best regional film in Tamil) – Bharathi, which also received many other awards. Periyar (2007) is his third release. Till now he has received three National Film Awards apart from three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and his movies have been screened at various film festivals. He sketches historical biographies through his movies.

A resident of Pallikonda, Tamil Nadu he was born in the year 1953 to an orthodox family.  After post-graduation from Presidency College, Chennai he worked as a technical officer with the Intelligence Bureau in Mumbai for four years. Theatre has been his passion since then. It was during that period when he staged many of his plays. He became an IAS officer in 1983 and was appointed in Kerala cadre. Two years later he got married and had two daughters, of whom Sindhu Rajasekaran is a noted writer of present times.

As a writer, his first published work was a novel - “Yanai Kuthiria Ottagram”, which received best novel of the year award by the Tirupur Tamil Sangam. While working as a technical officer, he used to publish his plays in the early 1980s. He published a collection of his three plays titled - “Vayiru” in 1980 and later published its Hindi version as well. In 1995, he marked his directorial debut through Mogamul  and since then films became an integral part of his life.
