Gita Dey Biography

Gita Dey was noted actress of Bengali language who was equally active in movies as well as theatre. She has acted in more than 200 movies and has also done more than 2000 stage shows in a long career since 1938. She started her acting career at the age of 6. This renowned actress is noted most for her association with legendary director of Bengali cinema - Ritwik Ghatak. Meghe Dhaka Tara is her most memorable movie directed by Ghatak, where she played the role of a mother. She has also delivered memorable hits with Satyajit Ray and Komal Gandhar also. Her most memorable movies are Byapika Biday, Pareenita, Chirodiner, Prothom Pratisruti, Teen Kanya, Phuleswari, Kabi, Manjari Opera Dey and Abhaya o Srikanta. She has also appeared in one Malayalam movie – critically acclaimed ‘Kathavasheshan’ lead role played by Dileep and Jyothirmayi.

She was born in Kolkata in the year 1931. She started her acting career as a child artist. Ahuti directed by Dhiren Ganguly was her debut movie and she was only 6 old then. By the age of 13, she became acting in theatre as well. She joined Star Theater, where she got opportunity to work with renowned artist, Sisir Bhaduri. Since middle ‘50’s, she also started working for All India Radio and used to regularly appear in radio plays as a voice actor.

Apart from leading roles, she was equally prolific in gray shaded roles and comedies. She is popular for her prefect timing as well. She acted in Bollywood movie, Parineeta which was one of her last screen appearances. As a theatre artist, Badsahi Chaal staged at Kolkata in 1996 was her last work. Despite being ill, she was active in the film industry doing supporting roles. Tolly Lights and Chirodini Tumi Je Amar are her recent released Bengali movies. She passed away in the year 2011 aged 79.
