Girilal Jain Biography

Girilal Jain was a famous Indian journalist who worked with The Times of India from 1978 till 1988 as editor. Drawn towards Hindu nationalism, he also authored a few books on this subject which include - The Hindu Phenomenon. This popular work was published posthumously b his daughter Meenakshi. Many of his works towards the end of his life reflected his anti-bias towards Sikhs, Christians and Muslims. For his editorial titled "De-Turbaning of Sikhs", the journalist was criticized for his anti-Sikh bias. He is a recipient of Indian civilian honour Padma Bhushan in 1989. He passed away on 19 July 1993. Noted historian and political scientist Meenakshi Jain is his daughter.

 

Girilal was born in the year 1924 in a rural village near Delhi. He took graduation from Delhi University. He got married in 1951 to Sudarshan Jain and the couple had four children including the famous historian Meenakshi Jain. He joined The Times of India in 1950 and served as the editor of The Times of India from 1978 till 1988. Reportedly he was fired from the post in 1988 for his bias towards Hinduism.  He welcomed and supported Ram Temple at Ayodhya movement. He was an ardent supporter of Indira Gandhi. His editorial "De-Turbaning of Sikhs" published in 1982 earned him criticisms.

 

He strongly supported Indira Gandhi, who was often named as dictatorial by critics. He emphasized the need to provide extra power to Ms. Gandhi and stated that a weak central government was a danger to India. He also supported her during the Emergency period. After Indira’s death, through his writings he urged about the need to renew and strengthen the government.
