Gegong Apang Biography

Gegong Apang is a famous politician and one of the most influential leaders from Arunachal Pradesh. He is the second longest serving Chief Minister in the country with a record 22 years. He represented Indian national congress and has served as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh during the period, January 18, 1980 to January 19, 1999 and for the last time from August 2003 to April 2007 later he was replaced by Dorjee Khandu. Most recently in February 2014, he joined Bharatiya Janata Party. He joined BJP in the presence of BJP president Rajnath Singh at his residence, in New Delhi. He had led a BJP-led coalition government in the state during 2003.



He was born on 8th July 1949 in Rumgong, in District of West Siang. Apang won assembly elections for the first time in 1978, followed by 1980, 1984, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2004. He became the Chief Minister for the first time in the year 1980 and held the same position for almost 2 decades. He had to resign in 1999 when a split occurred in ruling congress party and couldn’t win a no-confidence vote. In 2003, he was elected as the leader of United Democratic Front and won Assembly elections as well. He took oath as Chief Minister once again in August 2003. His government was formed by coalition with Bharatiya Janata Party, the first state of East India to form a government with BJP.



In 2004, the BJP-ruled National Democratic Alliance lost the elections and Apang joined congress once again. Congress won a majority in state assembly elections and Apang became chief minister once again, the post he held till 2007. Apang was elected in the 12th Lok Sabha elections and served as the agriculture minister from 1977 to 1978.
