Geetanjali Shree Biography

Geetanjali Shree, also known as Geentanjali Pandey is a noted Hindi writer from Delhi. She writes novels as well as short stories. She is best known for her work, ‘Mai’, which was short listed for the Crossword Book Award in 2001. She shot to fame once the novel was translated to English and it was her first published novel. She has also done a critical work on famous Hindi Premchand. Apart from several short stories, she has published three novels till now. Her first story, Bel Patra (1987) was published in the literary magazine Hans. She published her first collection of short stories Anugoonj in 1991. Shree is the recipient of the Indu Sharma award.

Geetanjali Shree is a Delhi-based writer. ‘Shree’ is her mother’s first name. She was born in 1957 to a civil servant who spent his professional life at various parts of the country. For the same reason she was brought up in various towns of Uttar Pradesh. This upbringing with lack of English books brought her close to Hindi literature since her younger days. She graduated from Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi and later did Masters in Modern Indian History from JNU. Her doctoral thesis was on 'Between Two worlds: An Intellectual Biography of Premchand'.

Bel Patra (1987) – a short story was her first published work. But it was her second work - Anugoonj in 1991 which earned her recognition. She shot to fame after ‘Mai’ got translated to English. Told about three generation of women, the movie was later translated to Serbian, French, Korean and German languages. Till now she has published three novels and two short story anthologies. She is widely regarded as one of the promising Hindi writers at present. She is closely associated with Vivadi, a theater group comprising writers, artists, dancers and painters.
