Ganpat Patil Biography

Ganpat Patil was a noted Marathi actor of movies as well as cinema. He was popularly called by his nickname, Nachya, a traditional character in Marathi Tamasha and Lavani art forms, due to his portrayal of this character. For his contribution to Marathi movies, he was awarded with Chitrabhushan award in 2006. This award was given to him by Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal. He has also received Zee Marathi Lifetime Achievement Award. His acting career includes 62 films and 17 dramas total. ‘Songadya' and 'Lavanyavati are his noted movies.

Ganpat Patil was born in 1920. He lost his father at a younger age and hence faced hard childhood days. So, from the age of 7, he had to do odd jobs to help his mother and financially support his family. They used to sell bread and garlands to earn a living. Yet from those hard days, Patil dreamt to become an actor. In the movie, Bal Druv, he appeared in a bit role as an extra actor. He was a child artist while doing this role.

Ganpat specialized in acting the role of Nachya. He began with those roles with the plays, Aika Ho Aika and Jali Mandi Pikali Karavand. Seeing his stage performance, he was given a film role by the director Krishna Patil in the movie, Waghya Murali where Ganpat got the opportunity to do similar kind of role. Very soon he got more offers from films and has done numerous movies in supporting and character roles. Ganpat played a lead role in Bhalji Pendharkar’s movie Sakhya Sajana. The script was written keeping in mind of ‘Nachya’ type of roles of Ganpat in movies. Ganpat is regarded as an unconventional super star of Marathi movies. Yet it can be seen that he was type casted for a particular kind of role in movies. Ganpat Patil died at his residence on March 23, 2008 aged 88.
