Ganesh Gogoi Biography

Ganesh Gogoi was a popular writer, poet and multifaceted talent, who left the world at the early age of 31 on August 21, 1938. Ganesh Gogoi, popularly called Papori Kobi was also a lyricist, composer, playwright, actor and football player. Ganesh Gogoi was born at Jorhat of Assam on December 28, 1907 as the son of Kanak Chandra Gogoi.

 

He is regarded as the people’s poet and his romantic poems from popular work, Papori have been quoted by the youth for decades. His popular poems are Rupjyoti, Paporir Swapna, Naoria, Awahon and Boragi. Sokunir Protisodh, Jerengar Sati, Lachit and Kuri Satika are his significant plays. He is also known as a stage actor and has portrayed the roles of Shah Jahan, Sokunir Pratisodh and Kashmir Kumari and got connected to audience’s minds easily. His only book on lyrics is titled Geetimala. He used to compose the songs written by him also.

 

Ganesh Gogoi's childhood was spent at his native place Jorhat. He completed matriculation from Jorhat Government High School and joined Cotton College, Guwahati to pursue a degree in 1926. However one year later he left for Kolkata and was admitted to the Ripon College. He joined Kashi Hindu University also. Yet he didn’t complete studies. He was unmarried and died at a younger age.

 

His best playwrights were pictured in 'Jorhat theatre' where Ganesh Gogoi was associated with. Sokunir Protisodh, Jerengar Sati, Kashmir Kurmari, Lachit and Kuri Satika were a few major works. Government of Assam instituted an award in the name of Ganesh Gogoi from the year 2009. Ganesh Gogoi Kabita Kanan Park was named after him. A documentary film was made on his life and literary career, with the name, 'Ganesh Gogoir Jiban Surabhi'.
