G. M. Rao Biography

G. M. Rao is the founder of GMR Group of companies. He is serving as the Chairman of this establishment. GMR group is a leading infrastructure developer and construction company in India. His birthplace was Rajam in Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh.

He is a mechanical engineer. He established the GMR company from a single jute mill in Rajam in 1978. He was recognized as the huge business potential who has established three Greenfield power plants in India successfully. These plants are located in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Totally this has 13 power projects among which three are operational. They produce 808 MW of electricity. Ten projects based on Hydel and Thermal power are in its implementation phase.

He expanded this to the highway projects. Totally this group has completed six road projects. The 181 km Hyderabad – Vijayawada project, 29 km Chennai Outer Ring Road state project and 99 km Hungund – Hospet stretch are under construction.

Under his leadership, his company developed the Greenfield International Airport at Hyderabad and worked to modernize the Delhi International Airport by a world class terminal. This was inaugurated on 3rd July 2010.

He is the largest shareholder of the Vysya Bank and has contributed to the growth of ING Vysya Bank by serving as its Director and Chairman for more than two decades. In September 2006, he was made as the Chairman Emeritus. He received honorary doctorate degree from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University at Hyderabad. He also got Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Andhra University.

He was selected at Economics Times Awards for Corporate Excellence 2006 – 07 as the Entrepreneur of the Year. This was given in recognition of his entrepreneurial spirit and his potential in business ventures. He got the Most Promising Entrant to the Big League by CNBC TV18. At the Infrastructure Journal Award Ceremony held in London, he won the Infrastructure Person of the year award.

He owns the IPL cricket team Delhi Daredevils. The net worth of his assets is more than $2.6 billion USD as per the records of 2007.
