G. Aravindan Biography

G. Aravindan was a national award winning film director, screenwriter, musician and cartoonist from Kerala. He worked on parallel cinema and is regarded as a legend of Malayalam film industry. He was known for his unorthodox way of filmmaking and has often surprised the audience and critics with his unique style of film making and creativity. He was a well known cartoonist before entering to the world of cinema.

 

He debut film making with Uttarayanam (1974) followed by Kanchanasita in 1977. Pokkuveyil (1981), Chidambaram (1985), Oridethu (1986), Kanchana sita (1978), Unni (1988), Vasthuhara (1991), Easthappan (1979), Kummatti (1979) and Thampu (1979) are other noted works. He has also done a few documentary films like The Brown Landscape and The catch which won Kerala State awards for best documentary films. He has also done music direction for a few movies of which Ore thooval pakshikal won State awards. Though he has done only a few movies, all his movies are regarded as classics and assets of Malayalam film industry.

 

He has won National awards 7 times and State awards 18 times in different categories and he was active in the industry during the decades of 70’s and 80’s. Vaasthuhara, released in 1990 was his last movie as a director, for which he won best movie in Malayalam at national award function. He won National Award for the Best Feature Film on the 25th Anniversary of India's Independence for his debut movie, Utharayanam. This movie won regional category award as well. He has received best director award thrice for the movies, Kanchana Sita, Thampu and Oridathu. Chidambaram won best feature film award in 1986.

 

G. Aravindan was the son of famous comedy writer M. N. Govindan Nair. Aravindan started his career as a cartoonist for Mathrubhumi. His cartoon series Cheriya Manushyarum Valiya Lokavum during early 1960’s was quite popular. Later he moved to theater and it paved way to movies in middle 1970’s. Aravindan died on 15 March 1991, before the release of Vasthuhara. All awards received were posthumously.
