Frank Fernand Biography

Frank Fernand, also known as Franklin Fernandes was a renowned film maker and musician from Goa remembered for his significant contributions to Konkani film industry. Amchem Noxib and Nirmonn are his masterpiece works and best contributions to Konkani cinema. He has worked as a music conductor for many Bollywood movies like Don, Hera Pheri, Zanjeer and Victoria No. 203 and has also worked as an assistant director of Bollywood in the 1970s for movies like Johny mera naam. Frank also produced two Hindi films "Priya" and "Ahat". He died of Parkinson's disease on April 1, 2007.

 

He was born in Curchorem, Goa in 1919. He has married twice and from both the marriages, he has 4 children. He was drawn towards music during his younger days and learnt music, violin and trumpet. Then he joined the music band of George Theodore, who played at Green's Hotel and Taj Mahal Hotel. In the 1940s he played at Mumbai, Mussoorie, Delhi etc. Once he happened to hear the speech of Mahatma Gandhi at Mussoorie, which prompted him to play music instruments in Indian style, rather than western. He was deeply influenced by the speech of Gandhi.

 

The turning point of his musical journey was in 1946 when he joined as assistant to celebrated Indian music director duo – Shankar Jaikishen. As a music conductor he was associated with Bollywood music for about 3 decades and has become a part of many golden hits which music lovers prefer to hear even today. He worked under Anil Biswas, Kishore Kumar, Roshan, C. Ramchandra, Kalyanji Anandji etc. His love to his mother tongue prompted him to work in Konkani language and thus started a new beginning. He provided the musical score to Konkani film "Mhoji Ghorkan’n" and the Hindi film "Chor Darwaja".
