Firdaus Kharas Biography

Firdaus Kharas is a social entrepreneur and media producer who has won 70 international awards till now for his works. He uses video and animation as his medium for betterment of society. He founded Chocolate Moose Media in 1995. His TV series and documentaries give social messages and general awareness to public. Health issues, children’s programming, human rights, dementia and refugees are his primary focuses. In 2011 he was nominated as a Transformational Canadian. ReelWorld Trailblazer Award and Peabody Award are other noted awards received by Kharas. Currently he resides in Canada and is a Canadian citizen.

 

He was born on November 18, 1955 in Kolkata in a middle class Parsi family. His father was a mechanical engineer and his mother a British-trained lawyer. His social awareness was created by none other than his mother who was a volunteer of an NGO. He was also taken to Mother Teresa’s home for the dying. Kharas started writing plays and acting since high school life at La Martiniere School For Boys, Kolkata. He was the first recipient of the Rotary Club of Bombay’s international exchange-student scholarship. He got the scholarship after the completion of graduation course. With scholarship, he studied at Commodore Perry High School, Hadley and later, political science at Thiel College. In 1978, he received a scholarship to complete his master’s degree at Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. He also has an honorary L.H.D. from Thiel College and he is an Honorary Fellow at the American Intercontinental University. After studies, he published the books, Togo and How To Immigrate To Canada.

 

Kharas served as the executive director of the United Nations Association in Canada from 1982 until 1987. In 1995, he founded Chocolate Moose Media which aimed at social work and awareness programs. His programs regularly appear in Discovery channel, Animal Planet and Disney Channel. He has also produced six documentary films.
