Fatima Zakaria Biography

Fatima Zakaria is the Chairman of the Maulana Azad Educational Trust, Aurangabad. She is a journalist who currently serves as the editor of the Taj magazine of the Taj Hotels, Mumbai. Earlier she has served editorship of Mumbai Times, and Sunday edition of The Times of India. Zakaria is also the President of the Maharashtra College of Arts, Science, and Commerce in Mumbai, and Chairman of the All India Khilafat Committee for education. She is also Executive Vice-President of the Board of Governors of the Trust's Institute of Hotel Management.

 

She was married to politician, freedom fighter and Islamic religious cleric, Rafiq Zakaria. Her eldest stepson Tasneem Zakaria Mehta is an art historian and writer. The youngest stepson Fareed Zakaria is a journalist and star anchor of CNN. She has been honoured with Padma Shree in 2006 for her outstanding contribution to the fields of literature and education. She has been associated with diverse fields like journalism, social work, publishing and education.

 

In 1958, she established an NGO for childcare and training for underprivileged women. It offered free meals, education and healthcare for women and children. She joined ‘The Times of India’ in 1970 as a journalist and later rose to position of Senior Assistant Editor. She has interviewed many political icons like Indira Gandhi and Margaret Thatcher, during her association with ‘Times of India’. She was associated with politics and culture topics during this time.

 

In 1983, she received Sarojini Naidu Integration Award for Journalism. She has given significant contributions to Bombay University Senate as an educationalist. At present she focuses on a cenntre for advanced studies in Shimla.
