Fali Mistry Biography

Fali Mistry was a well-established cinematographer of Bollywood, known for the movies – Guide and Fakeer. He was active in Bollywood for about 5 decades from 1940s to 1970s. Amrapali (1945), directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal was his first noticed work. He was a leading member of Navketan Films in the 1960s under which he did many memorable movies like Guide (1967), Prem Pujari (1970), Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), Heera Panna (1973), Ishq Ishq Ishq (1974) and Des Pardes (1978), all belonging to Dev anand. He has also directed three movies - Jan Pahchan (1950), Armaan (1953) and Sazaa (1951) starring Dev Anand. His younger brother, Jal Mistry (1923-2000) was also a noted cinematographer and winner of Filmfare awards 4 times. Fali was married to lead actress of yesterdays – Shyama.

 

Mistry started his career in Bollywood in the early 1940s and got attention for the first time with the movie – Amrapali, periodic drama. He has worked as an assistant under legendary cinematographer of Indian cinema - V. K. Murthy. Since the success of the movie Guide in 1967, he was associated with Navketan films, under which he gave his best works. He also directed a few movies with Dev Anand in the early 1950s of which Sazaa is a noted work. His glamorous lighting earned him appreciation from audience in those days. He often worked aside his brother Jal Mistry with the name Mistry brothers.

 

Shyama fell in love with the cinematographer cum director during the film shooting of Sazaa. She was only 16 years old then and two years later in 1953 they got married. The couple had three children. He passed away in 1979 during his middle ages. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Cinematographer twice, Guide (1967) and Fakira (1977).
