Eunice De Souza Biography

Eunice de Souza is a contemporary Indian poetess who writes in English. ‘Women in Dutch painting’ (1988) is her best known work. Ways of Belonging (1990), Fix (1979) and ‘Selected and New Poems’ (1994) are other published poetry works. She is also known as a literary critic and novelist. She has edited numerous anthologies and writes a weekly column for the Mumbai Mirror. Currently she lives in Mumbai. Dev & Simran: A Novel (2003) and Dangerlok (2003) are her novels. Known as an eminent teacher, she retired as Head of the Department of English in St Xavier's College, Mumbai. She is acknowledged as one of the most popular Indian English poets at present. She has also been associated with theatre as a director and stage actress.

 

She was born in Pune in 1940, to Roman Catholic parents of Goan origin. Her ancestors are Portuguese. She lost her father at the age of 3. Her childhood days were spent in Pune. After post-graduation, she took a PhD from the University of Mumbai. Then she began her teaching career in St. Xavier's College, Mumbai and retired as head of department of English. She has more 25 years of experience in St. Xavier’s.  She organized literary festivals while at college.

 

Fix (1979) was her first published collection of poems, which made her a popular poetess. After that she published Ways of Belonging (1990) and ‘Women in Dutch painting’ (1988). She started her career as a novelist only after year 2000 and published two novels - . Dev & Simran: A Novel (2003) and Dangerlok (2003). She has also four published children's books.
