Dwarkanath Tagore Biography

Dwarkanath Tagore was one of the first Indian industrialists and entrepreneurs who played a significant role in the Bengal Renaissance. He was the founder of the Jorasanko branch of the Tagore family and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore is his grandson. His son Debendranath Tagore was also a significant part of Bengal Renaissance. Dwarakanath Tagore was a descendant of Rarheya Brahmins of Vandyopadhya division.

He was born in Tagore family as the second son of Nilmoni Thakur and Menaka. His father was employed in the Calcutta Police. He was adopted by childless couple, Ramlochan and Alakasundari. Menaka and Alakasundari were siblings. His early education was done at home itself. At the age of 10, in 1804 he joined Sherbourne's school on the Chitpur Road. Sherbourne was his teacher in the school. After the death of Ramlochan in 1807, as Tagore was a minor, zamindari estates were governed by the complicated Regulations of Permanent Settlement. At the age of 16, Dwarkanath left school to participate in the Zamindari left by his adopted father Ramlochan Thakur. He worked as an apprentice under Robert Cutlar Fergusson, a barrister at Kolkata. On 7 February 1811 Dwarkanath was married to Digambaridevi. The couple had 6 children and she died in January 1839.

Dwarkanath invested land in other businesses and claimed what he deemed a fair return. In 1822 Dwarkanath took additional service in the British East India Company as Shestidar to Trevor Plowden, Collector for the 24 Parganas. Tagore is acknowledged as a civic leader of Kolkata who played a pioneering role in setting up a string of commercial ventures. In 1828, he became the first Indian bank director. In 1829, he founded Union Bank in Kolkata. He died on 1 August 1846 at the St. George's Hotel in London after a brief illness.
