Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu Biography

Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu was a prominent Carnatic violinist from Bangalore. He was partially blind. Recipient of numerous honours, he received Sangeet Natak Academi Award in Fine Arts in 1953. Padma Shree Award in 1957, Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1941 by Madras Music academy, Sangeetha Kalasikhamani award in 1941 by The Indian Fine Arts Society and Kala Prapoorna in 1950 by Andhra University are the major honours received by his during his life time. Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu Memorial Trust was awarded with Raja-Lakshmi Award in 1992 by Sri Raja-Lakshmi Foundation, Chennai. Naidu passed away on 25 November 1964 aged 71.

 

Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu was born on 8 November 1893 on a Diwali day. Born in Bangalore his childhood days were spent in Visakhapatnam. Known for his unique and unparalleled technique, he was a musician of high esteem. Though he was partially blind, he excelled in the field of solo performances apart from being an accompanist for leading vocalists. In 1919 he started his professional career as a music teacher in Maharaja's Music College in Vijayanagaram. When he was appointed as a Professor of violin, he was 26 years old. After working as a professor of music for more than 15 years, he became the principal of the college in the year 1936.

 

Two years later he gave his solo performance as a violinist in Vellore. Apart from being a great musician he has also contributed to the music world, a few literary pieces. He firmly believed in the rule of regular riyas and taught the same principle to his disciples as well. Among his prominent disciples include – Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana, noted Carnatic musician. The legendary playback singer Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao was also his disciple.
