Dukhiram Swain Biography

Dukhiram Swain was a popular actor of Oriya cinema known for negative roles. He has won state award for best villain several times. He has also played numerous character roles for Oriya movies and a few hero and comedy roles. He was honoured with the Jayadeva Purashkar, the highest State Award for Excellence in Art and Literature by Orissa state Film Awards. This award was given posthumous in the year 1994. His name always comes in the first list of natural actors of Oriya movies. He is also a recipient of Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi. Apart from movies, he has been active in small screen as well.  He was a linguist who could speak several languages.  

 

Dukhiram Swain was born in Daraba, Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha. He started his acting career as a stage actor of Annapurna Theatre. Sri Lokenath released in 1960 marked him big screen debut. Though he has appeared on screen in lead role, supporting role, comedian and villain, it was his negative shaded roles that placed his name among the most versatile actors of Ollywood. Matira Manisha, Jajabar, Shesha Shrabana, Phula Chandana, Paradeshi Chadhei and Rana Bhumi are his memorable characters. Shesha Shrabana has been one among his most memorable performances where he played the role of the villain - Nidhi Mishra. It was during the time when zamindars in the form of villains have just started appearing onscreen.

 

In 1987, he received Orissa State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for the movie – Bhulihuena. Rakhile Siba Mariba Kie, Lakhe Siba Puji Paichi Pua, Rana Bhumi, Akuha Katha and Sagar Ganga are among his last releases. He also acted in a Hindi movie, Drishti (1990).
