Dola Banerjee Biography
Dola Banerjee is an Indian sportswoman who plays the game of archery. She has represented India in the 2004 Summer Olympics and 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics but could not reach the finals.
She was born on 2nd June 1980 in Baranagar in North 24 Parganas District of West Bengal. Her father’s name is Ashok Banerjee and her mother’s name is Kalpana Banerjee. She completed her education at Baranagar Rajkumari Memorial Girls High School. She has one younger brother Rahul Banerjee who is also concentrating in the sport of archery. The singers Shaan and Sagarika are her cousins.
She was interested in archery from her young age and so she joined Baranagar Archery Club at her age of nine and made her first international appearance when she was just 16 years old in 2006 in Youth World Championship in San Diego.
She got 13th rank in the individual event in the Beijing World Archery Championship 2001. Her good performance in the New York World Championship 2003 gave her entry into the Athens Olympic Games 2004. She was a part of the Indian team that took part in the 2004 Summer Olympics but could get only 13th rank in the women’s individual event and 8th rank in the team event.
She won gold medal in the individual event of the Meteksan World Cup archery held at Dover in England in August 2007. This got her ticket into the world cup final that was held at Dubai in November 2007. She won in that game and bagged the gold medal and became world champion in archery.
She also won gold medal in the Women’s Team Recurve along with Deepika Kumari and L Bombayala Devi in the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi. She also won a bronze medal in the Recurve Individual event. She reached up to quarter finals in the Antalya World Cup 2006.
She showed excellent performance in the Madrid World Championship 2005 where she could take her into the semi-finals. She became the first ever Indian women to get Arjuna Award from the Indian government.
