Dingko Singh Biography

Dingko Singh is a successful Indian boxer from Manipur. Gold medal at 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, eh has won several international championships for India. Government of India honoured him with Padma Sri for his achievements in Indian sports. The famous Indian boxer Mary Kom who brought Olympics medal to India was inspired by Dingko Singh and took boxing as profession. Singh made his debut into the arena of International Boxing in 1997, and won King's cup 1997 held at Bangkok. Since then he had a glorious period in boxing.  He currently serves as a boxing coach in the Indian Navy.

 

Dingko Singh was born on 1 January 1979. He was born in a remote village of Manipur into a very poor family. Had to face a lot of hardships since his childhood days, he was brought up in an orphanage. The hidden talent of Dingko was identified by trainers at a Special Area Games scheme of Sports Authority of India. He received expert supervision of Major O.P. Bhatia to be trained in boxing. He won the Sub Junior National Boxing Championship in 1989 at Ambala at the age of 10. After that coaches and selectors recognized a promising career of Dingko.

 

He made his international debut in 1997 at the age of 16, and won King's cup 1997 held at Bangkok. He was also declared as the best boxer of the meet. The following year he got selected to Bangkok Asian Games. Though he was dropped from his team for some unknown reasons at present, he was selected for the last moment and he made it history by winning gold at Asian Games 1998 in 54 kg Bantamweight category. He defeated world no.3 Wong Prages Sontaya in the semifinals and Timur Tulyakov from Afghanistan in the finals. Singh was honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1998 and Padma shri in 2013.
