Dilip Chitre Biography

Dilip Chitre was a prominent writer from Marathi and English literature. He was also a painter and filmmaker. He started his professional film career in 1969 and has done one feature film as well as several documentaries. He has also done several painting exhibitions. He along with Arun Kolatkar and Ramesh Samarth started Shabda. He has worked as honorary editor of New Quest, a journal. In 1975 he received a visiting fellowship by the International Writing Programme of the University of Iowa, US. He has also worked as director of many literal organizations like Indian Poetry Library and translation centre at Bharat Bhavan. He has also worked as editor and translator of many works.

 

Chitre was born on 17 September 1938 at Baroda, Gujarat, as the son of Purushottam Chitre. His family moved to Mumbai in 1951 and his first collection of poems was published in 1960. He was one of the prominent figures of "little magazine movement" of Marathi during 1960’s. Among his published books, Ekun Kavita was published in 3 volumes. As Is,Where Is – selected English poems and "Shesha" English translation of selected Marathi poems are among his last published works. Among his translation works, Anubhavamrut of Dnyaneshwar and works of Sant Tukaram need special mention. His noted poetry works include - Ekun Kavita, Mithu Mithu Porat ani Sutak, Punha Tukaram, Dahaa By Dahaa, Sheeba Raneechya Shodhaat, Agatikanche Jaagatikikaran, Tukobache Vaikunthagaman and Bhau Padhye Yanchyaa Shreshtha Kathaa. His works also include Hindi and Gujarati.

 

He has also worked as a columnist of leading magazines like The Free Press Journal, Abhiruchi, Ravivar Sakal, Loksatta, Quest and New Quest. For his film Godam, he has received several Maharashtra State Awards and the Prix Special du Jury. Dilip Chitre died at his residence in Pune on 10 December 2009 after fighting from cancer.
