Digvijaya Singh Biography

Digvijaya Singh is an Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh belonging to Congress Party. Currently he serves as the General Secretary of the Indian National Congress party's All India Congress Committee. As a well-known politician he has served as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for two terms from 1993 to 2003. He was also a cabinet minister of former Chief Minister Arjun Singh during 1980-1984. His brother, Lakshman Singh is also an active politician of INC.

 

Singh was born at Indore in 1947 as the son of politician and ruler of the former princely state of Raghogarh, Balbhadra Singh. After formal education at Indore, he took B. E. in Mechanical Engineering from Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science. He was married to Asha Singh. She died in 2013 after battling with cancer for a long time. Six months later, he got close with a media personality and TV Anchor, Amrita Rai and during the election time, he declared his relationship with her. Amrita too has admitted the matter and said that she is to divorce her present husband. This single news has gone viral over net.

 

Singh entered active politics in the late 1960s. The president of the Raghogarh Nagar palika during 1969-1971 was one of noted positions held by him during his early phase of political career. He joined Jana Sangh in 1970 and became MLA for the first time in 1977, where he got elected from Raghogarh Vidhan Sabha constituency. He was re-elected from the same constituency for the second time in 1980 and he served as the cabinet minister of state.

 

He was president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee between 1985 and 1988 and got re-elected again in 1992. He was nominated by Rajiv Gandhi in 1985. In 1984 general elections, he became the first congress leader to get selected from Rajgarh Lok Sabha constituency. Though he lost in 1989 general elections, he regained the same seat two years later. In 1993 he was appointed as the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. Now he serves as General Secretary of the Indian National Congress party's All India Congress Committee.
