Dibyendu Palit Biography

Dibyendu Palit is a noted writer associated with Bengali literature. Apart from poetry he is also associated with novels and short stories. He is a recipient of several prestigious awards and currently he is settled in Kolkata. Ananda Purashkar (1984), Bankim Puraskar (1990) and Sahitya Akademi Award (1998) are the major honours received by him for his literary career. A few of his novels have been adapted to Bengali silver screen. His famous novel, Antordhan has been made to a Bengali feature film by the famous filmmaker Tapan Sinha. The movie - Eashwar Mime Co is a screen adaption of his story, Mukhabhinoy. Dibyendu’s son Amitendu Palit is an eminent IES officer and economist.

 

He was born on March 5, 1939 at Bhagalpur in Bihar during the British rule. Bagalacharan Palit and Niharbala Palit are his parents. He was born into a big family and has 9 siblings. Following the death of his father at a younger age, he had to take the responsibility of the big family on his shoulders. He had to face a lot of hardships and struggles during his younger days, which gave him inspiration and themes for writing in future. Despite hardships of his younger days, he completed his graduation and Master’s degree.

 

Dibyendu Palit owns a great literal career. He contributed in the forms of novels and short stories. Aboidho, Swapner Bhitor, Dheu, Sahojhoddha, Sabuj Gandho, Anusaran and Aeka are some of his popular novels. Sukresoni, Mukhguli, Mukabhinoy, Munnir songe kichukkhon, Alomer nijer Bari and Chilekotha are among his short story collections. The movie - Eashwar Mime Co based on his work, Mukhabhinoy was screened at many international film festivals including Durban International Film Festival and 3 Continents Festival.
