Dibyendu Bhattacharya Biography

Dibyendu Bhattacharya is a noted actor of Bollywood known for playing supporting roles. He is mostly associated with offbeat movies. Dev D released in 2009 brought him to limelight. In the National award winning movie – Chittagong, he played the pivot role of Ambika Chakrabarty. This role is one among his career best till now. The movie also starred Manoj Bajpai and Vega Tamotia in lead roles. Black Friday, B. A. Pass, Lootera and Maqbool are other noted works. Yet he has also done a few commercial movies such as Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal. He also did one Bengali movie, Jole Jongole in 2007 starring Mithun Chakraborty and Jackie Shroff.

Dibyendu Bhattacharya is of Bengali origin. He has a strong theater background. He made his film debut in 2001 with Monsoon Wedding, a tri-language film directed by award winning director Mira Nair. After doing a couple of Bollywood films – Maqbool and Ab Tak Chhappan, he was seen in the controversial film, Black Friday, playing the role of Yeda Yakub. The movie based on real-life incidents also starred Kay Kay Menon and Pavan Malhotra in lead roles. In 2009 he played the pivot role of Dev's 'friend' Chunni who leads to his ruin in the highly praised experimental film – Dev D. A wonderful revamping of the character Dibyendu earned a loud noise of applause for this character role. It also helped him to impress many filmmakers of offbeat movies.

Shonali Bose liked her in Dev. D and Black Friday, and that’s how he got the pivot role of revolutionary Ambika Chakrabarty in Chittagong in 2012. The actor was grown up hearing the stories of Surya Sen and his associates and he gladly accepted the role. Though he asked for the title role of Surya Sen, Shonali had already assigned the role of the veteran actor Manoj Vajpayee. It was during the same time when Ashutosh Gowarikar was making the movie, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey based on same subject.
