Dhvani Desai Biography

Dhvani Desai is an Indian animation filmmaker and a poet. She has won many international awards for her works. Manpasand - the Perfect Match produced by the Children's Film Society of India is the best known work of Desai. It received Gold Remi Award at World Fest Houston, U.S.A. 2008. Metamorphosis – her animation studio has produced several animations and ad films. She has also received Bronze World Medal at 2008 New York Film Festival, Silver Award for Best First Short Fiction of a Director at Indian Documentary Producer's Association, 2007, Girnar Award, Bruhad Mumbai Gujarati Samaj in 2009 and Rotary Award for Excellence in Animation, Rotary Club, Mumbai, 2008. She has also served as International Juror at several international film festivals.

 

Desai was born in Mumbai. Her grandfather Surendrarai Bhaurai Desai was a well known social reformist. Her father is a noted poet, thinker and scholar – Dr. Sudhir Desai. Her mother Tarinibahen Desai is a noted Gujarati writer. Her elder sister Sanskritirani Desai is also a leading Gujarati poet. Her brother Sanskar Desai is a senior documentary filmmaker. She started painting and writing poetry at a younger age. She has also performed in plays, television and radio as a child artist.

 

Desai did Statistics from Elphinstone College, Mumbai. She took MBA from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management and Higher Studies. She joined the Government Law College, Mumbai and has also done post-graduation diploma in Computer Management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. She entered the field of animation in the year 1991 as a trainee and learnt 2D animation. Later she took formal training in 3D animation from Xavier's Institute of Communication. Her short film, Manpasand — The Perfect Match has been screened three times at the 9th Hamburg Children's Short Film Festival. The Mahatma which she co-directed with her elder brother is another noted work.
