Dhruva Chatterjee Biography

Dhruva Chatterjee, also written as Dhruv Chatterji was a famous screenwriter of Bollywood in the golden era of 1960s. He wrote story, screen plays and dialogues for the films. He is best known for writing the scripts of suspense thrillers and has been associated with Raj khosle known for his trilogy of suspense films with Sadhana playing the pivot role of ‘Mystery Girl’. In 1959, he was nominated for Best Story at Filmfare for Meena Kumari – Rajendra Kumar starrer Chirag Kahan, Roshni Kahan, though he was not able to win the award. Woh Kaun Thi? (1964), Kohra (1964) and Gumnaam (1965) are his noted scripts as a suspense writer.

 

One of the most well established screenwriters of Bollywood in the 1960s, he has delivered numerous silver jubilee hits. Some of his noted works include – Chirag Kahan Roshni Kahan (1960), Hariyali Aur Rasta (1962), Gehra Daag (1963), Dulha Dulhan (1964), Woh Kaun Thi? (1964), Kohra (1964), Gumnaam (1965), Chor Machaye Shor (1974), Dus Numbri (1976) and Fakira (1976). Professor Pyarelal released in 1981 was his last work as a writer. Though known for suspense thrillers, he was equally verse in family dramas.

 

Dhruva Chatterjee was born and brought up in Bengal. He moved in Mumbai where he started his film career in the early 1950s writing film stories. He wrote the story of 1954 film – Ferry. Chirag Kahan Roshni Kahan (1959) is his credited work as a story writer, for which he earned a Filmfare nomination for Best story. The movie proved to be his career breakthrough and since early 1960s he became a regular writer of Bollywood movies. His celebrated screen plays – Gumnaam, Kohra and Woh Kaun Thi? are stil, regarded as the path breakers of Bollywood cinema.
