Dhritiman Chatterjee Biography

Dhritiman Chatterjee is a Bengali actor, best known for the role as protagonist in Satyajit Ray's Pratidwandi, released in 1970. He has mostly been associated with new wave cinema, also known as parallel cinema, particularly in the era of 1970s and 1980s. He has served as the Jury of the Indian National film Awards several times and also been awarded for his acting skills. He has been mostly associated with directors of parallel cinema like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen, Deepa Mehta and Jane Campion. He has also appeared in a few Bollywood movies, though not a part of commercial ones. He has been associated with theatre work at Chennai for many years, associated with English plays.

 

He was born in Bengal in 30 May 1945. His real name is Sundar Chaterji. He completed his college studies at Presidency College, Kolkata and the Delhi School of Economics. He began his acting career in 1970 playing the lead role for Satyajit Ray's Pratidwandi. His performance was incomparable and was recognized by the critics widely. This actor also has a parallel career in advertising, social communications and documentary filmmaking.

 

His acting talents have been well appreciated by India’s biggest director, Satyajit Ray. He has astonished Hindi film audience by doing bit roles for a few movies. Agent Vinod and Kahani are his recent Bollywood appearances. He worked with director Aparna Sen in 36 Chowringhee Lane and 15, Park Avenue. He made his Mollywood debut through critically acclaimed movie, Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi in 2013. He has appeared only in lesser number of movies. He currently anchors the television show, Pradhanmantri (TV Series) in Bengali.
