Dhirendranath Choudhury Biography

Dhirendranath Choudhury was a scholar, writer, teacher and a religious reformer. As a writer, his noted works are Sanskar O Sanrakshan, Mahapurush Prasanga, Dharmer Tattwa O Sadhan, Maitrupanishad and In Search of Jesus Christ. He has worked in Hindu College, Delhi, as professor of philosophy. He was married to Binodini, the niece of the noted scholar Mahesh Chandra Ghosh.

 

Dhirendranath Choudhury was born in the year 1870 in Nagarpur, Mymensingh, now in Bangladesh, as the son of Madhab Choudhury. He was attracted towards philosophy and religion from a young age. Later he wrote philosophical articles in the journel, Brahmatattwa. During college life, he joined Theological Society. After completion of post-graduation, he got married to Binodini according to Brahmo rites. In those days, it was considered a daring task to conduct marriage this way. He actively participated in Swadeshi movement of early 20th century and very often, his home at Cuttack was the meeting place of its activists.

 

His teaching career started with Brajamohan College at Barisal. Later he joined Hindu College Delhi. But as he didn’t prefer to stay away from his hometown, he returned from Delhi and joined Edward College at Pabna as professor of philosophy. Later he gave up his teaching profession to join as missionary of Sadharan Brahmo Samaj. As a part of this organization, he travelled nationwide from North to south with his religious and philosophical speeches. He was conferred the title of Vedantabagish for his knowledge in Vedas and philosophy.

 

Later he settled at Hazaribagh and became secretary of Hazaribagh Brahmo Samaj in 1930 where he worked for 4 years. Many great personalities used to regularly visit his home. Kamini Roy, Dr.P.K.Roy, Sarala Roy and Jnananjan Niyogi were among those visitors. He died in the year 1938 survived with his wife.
