Deven Verma Biography

Deven Verma is a comedian of Bollywood as well as television. He frequently appeared in comic roles in the movies of leading directors like Basu Chatterji, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar.  He has also produced and directed a few movies of which Besharam needs special mention. Besharam included top stars of Bollywood – Amitabh Bachchan and Sharmila Tagore played lead roles in this movie. This movie also starred Amjad Khan, A. K. Hangal and Nirupa Roy in supporting roles. Other movies as a director are Dana pani, Nadaan and Bada kabuthur. As an actor, classic comedy, Angoor directed by Angoor is his most memorable role.

 

Devan Verma has won Filmfare - best comedian actor award three times. The movies are Chori Mera Kaam (1976), Chor Ke Ghar Chor (1979) and Angoor. He has received nominations for Arjun Pandit and Ek se badkar ek (1977), Doosra aadmi (1978), Golmaal and Parlog (1980), Judai and Thodi si bewafai (1981), Rang birangi (1984) and Saheb (1986). After 1986, Filmfare awards were not conducted for a couple of years and when it came back, Devan had already faded from the screen. He has received 12 Nominations at Filmfare of which 3 resulted in wins. Thus he was one of the leading comedians of the industry from 1975 to 1985, the time when Basu Chatterji, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar were ruling the screen with parallel cinema as well as comedies.

 

Devan was born on 23rd October, 1937. He was brought up in Pune. He is married to Rupa Ganguly, daughter of Ashok Kumar and sister of Preeti Ganguly. He started working in movies since 61. His first noted work was Dharmaputra, released in the year 1961. He has appeared in hit movies of 60’s in minor roles – Anupama, Baharein phir bhi aayegi and Milan. From 70’s onwards he began to get comic roles. Budha mil gaya released in the year 1971 needs special mention. Other memorable roles include Milan, 36 Ghante, Dhund, Ek mahal ho sapnom ka, Arjun Pandit and Kabhi Kabhi. From late 80’s onwards he appeared in Doordarshan serials and was successful also. Later on he appeared in supporting roles in Bollywood. He was last seen in Calcutta mail in 2003.
