Devdas Gandhi Biography

Devdas Gandhi was the last son of Mahatma Gandhi and the son-in-law of C. Rajagopalachari, the two great Indian personalities who shaped India in the 20th century. Following his father’s steps Devdas was also associated with freedom struggle movement. He was born in South Africa on 22 May 1900, in those days when Gandhi spent his early years in South Africa, and returned to India along with his parents at a younger age. He later became a prominent journalist, serving as editor of Hindustan Times. An ardent fan of Cricket Legend, Don Bradman, he sponsored the scorecard at Feroz Shah Kotla while he was working with Hindustan Times. He passed away on 3 August 1957.

 

Devdas was born on 22 May 1900 to great Indian personalities, Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi, as their fourth and youngest son. Mohandas acted as midwife at the delivery of Devdas. As he was youngest, Devdas stayed near his father, and even got privilege to serve him as his secretary. He had three elder brothers – Harilal who had a troubled relationship with his father, Manilal and Ramdas Gandhi. Noted peace activist Ela Gandhi is his niece and Arun Manilal Gandhi is his cousin.

 

He fell in love with 15 year old daughter of C. Rajagopalachari. Devdas was 28 then. So the parents of both asked them to wait for next three years without seeing each other and with the blessings of their parents, they got married in 1933. The couple had four children, Rajmohan Gandhi, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Ramchandra Gandhi and Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee. Their elder son Rajmohan Gandhi is an eminent historian, biographer and former Rajya Sabha member. The second son Gopalkrishna Gandhi is a famous diplomat and administrator, Ramchandra Gandhi – a Philosopher and their single daughter Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee, who currently serves as the Vice-Chairperson of Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti and Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust.
