It’s not at all an easy to list the significant works of this trio and their contributions. They have done more than 300 films together in the golden era of 60’s and 70’s of Malayalam cinema. Leading singers of Malayalam – Yesudas and Jayachandran consider music director Devarajan as their mentor and guru. Whole Malayalam industry respects this music composer a lot and fondly calls him Devarajan Master. No doubt, Devarajan is the best composer of Malayalam movies and his contributions have significantly curved the best music of Malayalam and provided its basement too! His compositions will remain as ever green classics forever, till the end of music, no doubt.

Devarajan was born in Paravur of Kollam district. Attracted to communist party of India, he joined famous Malayalam drama group KPAC. Drama songs of KPAC share equal status of Malayalam cinema music and its cassettes used to sell in records that time. Devarajan has given significant contributions to KPAC that time. He was a trained classical singer and for the depth of knowledge he carried in Carnatic music, he can surely be called a genius of that times!

He debut film industry with Kaalam marannu in 1955 followed by Chathurangam in 1959, the first time he teamed up with lyricist Vayalar Rama Varma. Later witnessed was the biggest history of Malayalam film music. Third work of Devarajan, Bharya of 1962 was the biggest hit of this pair. The song ‘Periyare’ is still popular among the masses. Very soon he became Doyen of South Indian music. He has given music to 20 Tamil movies of which, Annai Velankanni was quite popular.

He was an atheist. Yet the famous temple of Kerala, Sabarimala closes everyday hearing Yesudas’ Harivarasanam composed by none other than Devarajan. ‘Guruvayur Ambala Nadayil’ and ‘Chethi manthaaram thulasi’ are popular film songs of Krishna. When he teams up with Vayalar and Yesudas, it seems as if it’s finest blend to happen. Keralites can’t forget the significant work done by this trio. They created magic one after another till Vayalar passed away in 1975 at a younger age of 47. When Vayalar left the world, it was something like loss of the heart beats of Devarajan tunes. Though he has teamed up with Bichu Thirumala, Bhaskaran and Srikumaran Thampi later, it was not enough to compensate the mesmerism created by Vayalar Devarajan team. Songs like Arikil nee undayirunnenkil of Nee ethra dhanya was a popular song during middle 1980’s.

A few among his best contributions include Nadi, Chakravarthini, Achani, Yakshi, Nadi, Sanyasini, Thriveni, Shakunthala and Anubhavangal paalichakal.
