Delhi Kumar Biography

Delhi Kumar is a noted character artist of Tamil films and television serials. He is known for his amazing chemistry with cine artist Bombay Gnanam and together they have worked as husband and wife for popular soaps like "Metti Oli" and Engey Brahmanan. Dumm Dumm Dumm (2001), Kannathil Muthamittal (2002) and Enthiran (2010) are some of his noted character roles on big screen. He is the biological father of popular actor Aravind Swamy, who was later adopted by his industrialist uncle, V. D. Swamy. Delhi Kumar has excelled on small screen playing ‘father’ roles. He is also a known stage actor and a senior drama artist.

 

Delhi Kumar is married to Gayathri and they have a son named, Arvind Swamy, who was later adopted by V. D. Swamy. Though associated with television right now, he is an accomplished theater artist who has been a member of Delhi Drama Troupe in Nanganallur in Madras, where Delhi Ganesh is also a member. That’s how ‘Delhi’ tag got added to his name. He started off as a stage artist and playwright and known for his scripted plays like Theerndhadhu Kanakku, an adaptation of the Agatha Christie Novel, Witness for the Prosecution. The actor has performed several Tamil plays in Delhi, where he was working. He had a passion of acting since college days.

 

He was spotted by K. Balachander for the first time when he reached Chennai after retirement from the theatre group. The director gave him opportunity through his popular television serials, which gave Delhi Kumar fame and recognition among Tamil TV Viewers. He entered the Tamil small screen through Tamil TV serial, Premi and shot to fame through "Metti Oli". His role as Chidambaram Pillai, the loving father of five daughters in the popular series was loved by millions.
