Deepti Naval Biography

Deepti Naval is an actress of Bollywood during 1980’s who belongs to the same genre of Smita Patel, Shabana Azmi, Supriya Pathak, Neena gupta and Ratna Pathak. Among her movies, classic comedy ‘Chashme Baddoor’ is most popular. Her other memorable movies are Ankahee, Hum paanch, Firaaq, Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!, Faasle,  Saath Saath, Mirch Masala and Leela. She is an excellent photographer who conducts exhibitions on her photo gallery. She is a fine painter too. She has also directed Do Paise Ki Dhoop, Chaar Aane Ki Baarish with Manisha Koirala in the key role. Her other memorable movies include – Junoon, Angoor, Hip hip hurray!, Wanted: Dead or alive!, Shriman Shrimati, Kissi Se Na Kehna, Rang Birangi, Nasihat, Ek Ghar, Yeh ishq nahi aasan, Aurat Per Ki Juti Nahin Hai, Holi, Main Zinda Hoon, Dushmani: A Violent Love Story, Mr. Azaad, Balwander, Mera Suhag, Guddu, Shoorveer, Inkaar, Abhishapt, Saudagar (1991), Ek baar chale aaoo, Katha, Yalgaar, Begaana and Aashiana. She has also starred in Aamir Khan’s debut movie as adult – Holi. She has acted with almost all art cinema actors during the decade of 80’s. Marhi Da Diva is her critically well acclaimed Punjabi movie.

 

Deepti Naval was born on 3 February 1957 in Amritsar, Punjab. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts at Hunter College of Manhattan. She debut silver screen with Jalian wala bagh in the year 1977 in a supporting role. Next year, she worked in Shyam Benegal’s Junoon. She did supporting actress role in this movie too. As a heroine her first movie was Ek baar phir. Her films mostly belong to art cinema and light cinema grouped under parallel cinema. She has worked with Nasuruddeen Shah, Raj Babbar and Farooq Sheik during this period, who are versatile for such parallel roles and whose careers are deeply linked with theatre.

 

Though she was talented as Smita Patel and Shabana Azmi, she got only a few exceptional roles throughout career. Angoor, Saath saath and Chasme Badoor belong to this category. The super classic song ‘Kaha se aaye’ sung by Yesudas was pictured on Deepti Naval. She has published a collection of her Hindi poems titled ‘Lamha lamha’ (1981) and English poems ‘Black wind’ in 2004. She was married to Bollywood director Prakash Jha, but now they are legally separated.
