Deepika Kumari Biography

Deepika Kumari is an Indian sportswoman who participates in the event of Archery. She ranks number one in the world in this sport. She bagged gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and got a chance to represent India in the 2012 London Olympics. She could only get 8th place in the women’s team even in Olympics.

 

She was born on 13th June 1994 in Ranchi in Bihar. Her father is Shivnarayan Mahato, an auto-rickshaw driver and her mother is Geeta Mahato, a nurse working in Ranchi Medical College. Her family was not able to support her career due to their poverty. Later she was supported by Vidya Kumari who is an archer at Tata Archery Academy. Deepika is employed at Tata Steel as a manager in its sports department in July 2012.

 

She got her training at the Arjun Archery Academy run by Meera Munda, wife of the Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda. In 2006, she joined Tata Archery Academy at Jamshedpur. She won the cadet World Championship title in November 2009. She joined KMCT College at Ranchi to study arts.

 

She won the junior compound individual gold medal in 2006 at the World Champion at Merida in Mexico and the 11th Youth World Archery Championship held at Ogden in USA. She bagged two gold medals in 2010 Commonwealth Games held at Delhi, one in individual event and the other in the women’s team recurve event.

 

She won her first World Cup individual recurve gold medal at Antalya in Turkey in Ma 2012. In that year, she became the number one in the world in the Women’s Recurve Archery. She was honored with the Outstanding Performance at CWG award at Sahara Sports Award 2010.
