D. V. Paluskar Biography

Pandit Dattatreya Vishnu Paluskar, popularly known as D. V. Paluskar was a child prodigy in Hindustani music. An accomplished Hindustani classical vocalist he inherited the Gwalior gharana and also learnt from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and was open to other houses of Indian Hindustani music. He performed in two duets (jugalbundi) aside great Amir Khan for the Hindi classic film - Baiju Bawra, a film dedicated to Indian Hindustani musician. "Aaj Gawat Man Mero Jhoomke" based on Raga Deshi and "Langar Kankariya Ji Na Maro" based on Raga Todi are those two songs. He has also rendered his voice for a Bengali film called Shaap Mochan.

 

D. V. Paluskar was born on May 28, 1921 in Nasik, Maharashtra into a musical family. His father Vishnu Digambar Paluskar was a great Hindustani musician of Gwalior Gharana and D V Paluskar carried forward his father’s tradition, though he accepted other forms of Hindustani music and styles as well. Gadgil is his original surname. He lost his father at the age of 10, and later learnt Gwalior gharana of Hindustani music from Pandit Vinayakrao Patwardhan, Pandit Narayanrao Vyas, Pandit Chintamanrao Paluskar and Pandit Mirashi Buwa. Narayanrao Vyas and Mirashi Buwa were disciples of his father Vishnu Digambar Paluskar.

 

He gave his first performance at the age of 14 at Harvallabh Sangeet Sammelan in Punjab. Apart from Gwalior Gharana of Hindustani music he inherited from his father and gurus, he also studied from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, an institution named after his father. Also known as a great bhajan singer, he cut his first disc in 1944. He was known for his melodious sweet voice. He passed away on October 26, 1955 aged only 34, two years after the musical film – Baiju Bawra was released, which included two of his songs. He was also a member of the Indian cultural delegation in 1955 who visited China, a few days before his death.
