D. V. Gundappa Biography

D. V. Gundappa was a Kannada writer and philosopher during the 20th century. His most noted work is Manku Thimmana Kagg, parallel to the poems of medieval poet Sarvajna. This work is regarded as a classic of Kannada literature. He was awarded Padmabhushan by the Government of India in 1974. He was honoured by Karnataka state chief minister in the year 1970 at Ravindra Kalkshetra, Bangalore. A few of his noted poetry works include - Mankuthimmana Kagga, Marula Muniyana Kagga, Antahpura Geete, Shri Rama Pareekshanam, Vasantha Kusumanjali, Nivedana, Kavite, Kethaki Vana and Geetha Shaakuntala. His works also include essays, dramas as well as other publications. He died on October 7, 1975 aged 88.

 

He is shortly known by the name, D.V.G. He started his career in journalism in 1906. He started "Bharat" and "Karnataka", Kannada newspapers. Later he started a weekly called "Sumathi" and a publication division called "Sumathi Granthamale". "The Karnataka" was started to publish books in Kannada. Many important books got an opening in the paper. The English paper earned him lot of respect but needed to close in 1921. He published Vrutta Patrike in 1928. His book Political Science published in 1952 included political thinking of western political thinkers and his political formulations.

 

His books Principles of Constitution and Probity in Public Life were based on power administration. Principles of Constitution is a comparative study of political growth of East and West while the second book tells about the prevailing political condition of the society. A few of his essays are Jeevana saundarya mattu saahitya, Baaligondu Nambike, Gnapaka chitra shale, Samskruti and Saahitya Shakti. Vidhyaranya Vijaya, Jack ked, Macbeth, Kanakaaluka and Tilottamey are his noted drama works. He has also written the biographies of Diwan Rangacharlu and Gopalakrishna Gokhale.
